Chief Joseph portrait, part II

The darkest and lightest values (except for neck area)
The darkest and lightest values (except for neck area)

I tried something a bit different on this portrait. I played with the photo in Photoshop to give it five total value levels (levels of brightness/darkness or shading); then I looked at other paintings of Native Americans to get some idea of the right colors for each of the five levels. I made puddles of color to match each of the five, and started putting all five values on the canvas until I had the face and neck covered. It worked fairly well to that stage. Then I started adding values and colors in between and added some small highlights. I'm kind of liking this technique. Below are a couple of photos I took as I moved along. There are still a few small shaping/drawing issues, but I can tell I'm moving toward a successful painting. As you can see, there's a lot of glare on the wet paint. (It looks pretty good in dim light =o)  )
